07.10.2021  |  by Cato Verhoeven  |  Designalism

Niels Schrader leads a Master of Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague called Non Linear Narrative. He teaches his students to combine journalistic and forensic research with data, information technology and art.

In his field of work, Niels analyses the relations of complexe socio-political issues and how they can be communicated to a broader audience. The audience being, for example, the younger generation: “You are by definition part of the political body. I think that you don’t get the whole story as an individual. My mission is to make the younger generation aware of that, and to engage them in this political discourse.” But his focus isn’t just on the younger generation.

He just launched a project called Acid Clouds. Acid Clouds is a series of photographs that document traces of virtual data. Together with photographer Roel Bakker, he travels at night to data centers in the Netherlands. “It’s almost like we are two maniacs doing that. Our work shows a lot of passion. But we also feel the urgency to reveal what we are tricked into with our data. Because of marketing speeches, we have this idea that data in all its volume and quantity is only good.”

In this podcast, Niels shares his journey and findings in the field of the non linear narrative. The new episode is available via Spotify, Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts.
